Semiotics and Italian Culture

Italy and semiotics share a twofold relationship. On the one hand, Italy is one of the leading countries in the discipline. Scholars like Umberto Eco, Ferruccio Rossi-Landi, Paolo Fabbri and Omar Calabrese, had a deep impact on the discipline and they still are internationally influential. On the other hand, Italy, with its amazingly rich art history and its kaleidoscopic cultural heritage, is also a perfect object of study for semiotics. Italian literature, painting, culture, fashion have been all fruitfully approached by semioticians all around the world. The conference Semiotics and Italian Culture is a tribute to this relationship and aims at encompassing both this perspectives: to this end our speakers will approach some of the key figures of Italian academia as well as some of the most valuable artistic trends in the history of the Peninsula.

“Italy is the country where the European renaissance of Semiotic has its roots and whence some of its best work continue to resonate worldwide”
Thomas Sebeok
