From Mafia Bankers to Socialites – Films by Paolo Sorrentino in Orion’s spring program

A melancholic Mafia banker, a football star, a ruthless politician, a loan shark, aging socialites, rockers and filmmakers. Paolo Sorrentino, one of the leading directors of the new Italian cinema draws impressive studies of fame, success, power and of their fragile nature with his camera. Sorrentino’s feature films from the breakthrough One Man Up (L’uomo in più, 2001) to the Oscar-winning The Great Beauty (2013) and to the latest film Youth (2015) will be screened at the National Audiovisual Institute’s archive cinema Orion this spring. The series will start on February 3rd.

Sorrentino’s latest film, Youth, starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel, had its Finnish premiere across the country on 8th of January. Watch the trailer:

Youth – Synopsis

A composer and a conductor Fred (Michael Caine) is on vacation in the Swiss Alps with his good friend Mick (Harvey Keitel) who is a veteran filmmaker. Fred is retired and has no intentions to go back to work. But there’s someone who does not take no for an answer:  Queen of England, Elizabeth II. Mick is working on a script which may become his last and the most important work, his “testament” as he calls it. The ending of the script as well as the reluctant leading actress (Jane Fonda) are causing him headaches.

The two men are monitoring the lives of their children and of the other hotel guests with interest and tenderness.  Fred’s daughter (Rachel Weiz) is going through a marital crisis. A mysterious actor (Paul Dano) is preparing himself for a very exceptional role. Loyal to his style, Paolo Sorrentino is depicting the lives of his characters with breathtaking visual images and with a sense of twisted humor.

In Sorrentino’s previous film The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza, 2013) the spectator was indulged in the spell of Roman decadence. The film was one of the most awarded of the year: it won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film as well as the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and the European Film Award. The new film Youth premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and was screened in Finland as the closing film of Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy in autumn 2015.
