Dancefest Kotka

Kaakon Tanssi ry is producing the first Kotkan Dancefest on the 22nd May at 7 pm on the main stage of Kotkan Kaupunginteatteri. Premiering that evening is the dance and live music performance piece Acts Deeply Voiced, which is collaboration with the dance group Boomtown Dance and Kymi Sinfonietta. The dance piece is based on the music of Jean Sibelius “Voces Intimae” String Quartet Op. 56. Acts Deeply Voiced is a performance created to celebrate the 150 years of the Sibelius‘ birth, and it also investigates the intimacy in the inter-intrapersonal relationships. The choreography and the production has been under the Italian artist Beniamino Borghi, who has developed the concept of the performance through a year of work: in the last five months he dedicate his full creativity on this project, using the physical theatre language in the choreography and also focusing and reading the Finnish composer‘s music. As producer of this work, Beniamino Borghi also has found other possibilities to take this show in Italy to the Teatro Filodrammatici in Milano and also to be performed also during Loviisan päivä in Skan Hotelli in Loviisa.

Acts Deeply Voiced

In the dance piece Acts Deeply Voiced Sibelius’ chamber music is translated in intimate movements. The dance piece was created for four performers and a live string quartet to celebrate the 150 years anniversary of Jean Sibelius’ birth and is based on his composition String Quartet Op. 56, Voces Intimae. The String Quartet is one of the composer’s most introspective works, with which the Finnish composer creates an intimate and mysterious atmosphere that well suited to explore the behaviors in the inter-intrapersonal relationships.

The artistic collaboration is between the dancers, an actor and a string quartet. The dancers in the piece belong to the Boomtown Dance, which is a collective of arts professionals. The group consists by members from Italy, UK and Finland. The musicians play with the Kymi Sinfonietta.
