How did the concept of nutrition, cooking and friendliness change over the last 90 years? How does the food on our plate influence our quality of life? Is the idea of ‘good food’ changing?

This well-documented journey between the traditional recipes of the regional cuisine and the black and white images from the Instituto Luce’s Archive tries to explore the eating habits and customs of the Italians throughout the years. Quando l’Italia magiava in bianco e nero is a tasty trip between dishes, kitchens, testimonies and funny stories from personalities of entertainment and culture.

La cena

Kesto: 126 min.

An evening at an Italian restaurant. Hosted by tolerant and relaxed Flora, various parties of middle-class people come in — large and small, young and old, regulars and tourists, married and single — to dine, converse, argue, celebrate, make confessions; to overhear other people’s discussions, to interrupt them, to sing, listen to music, and enjoy life. The camera, just like the people, moves constantly from table to table, into the kitchen and the back room to observe the staff’s petty jealousies and frustrations — until two hours later it’s time for everybody to go home.

“There are five reasons for drinking: a friend’s arrival, the excellence of the wine, present and future thirst, and whatever else you care to add”. Ermanno Olmi has returned to documentary filmmaking and makes a journey through valleys, living rocks and the culture of the Valtellina hillsides.

”Long Live the Lady!” is a contemporary comedy-allegory that reveals itself in the manner of a fairy tale set in an enchanted castle. The ”castle” is, in fact, a splendid Alpine hotel. Its princes, princesses, magicians and court jesters are members of an international conglomerate who have come together to talk business and pay their respects to the conglomerate’s aloof, very old and all-powerful chief executive officer, the ”lady” of the title.

The central character is Libenzio, a naive, young, apprentice waiter brought to the hotel to serve at the convention’s magnificent banquet. Libenzio observes all with the wide, surprised eyes of Jack at the top of the beanstalk. He marvels at the mysteries of the hotel’s grand kitchen and wine cellars.
