À la vie (To life) is a project conceived by the Duo Alterno a hundred years since the outbreak of the Great War. The theme of memory represents the common thread. In this concert program the counterpointed live and recorded music, poetry and figurative works lead in different ways back to 1914.


The masterpiece that opens the program, L’adieu à la vie (Farewell to life), written at the explosion of the Great War by the composer and pianist Alfredo Casella, born in Turin, formed in Paris, is a sweet and intense meditation of more than fifteen minutes on touching texts written by the Indian Nobel Prize for Literature Rabindranath Tagore with the translation of Andrè Gide.À la vie, the next piece, written a hundred years later by Riccardo Piacentini, who also was born in Turin, gives its name to the entire program by extrapolating the last part of Casella’s title and finding a new sense; it is a tribute to two brilliant artistic figures of the early twentieth century, the Russian Kazimir Malevic and the Italian Umberto Boccioni, who both in 1914 worked on two of the most iconic figurative works of that period, The Aviator and Dynamism of a man’s head. The piece uses, as well as pictorial contributions, texts written in the same years by Rainer Maria Rilke and it is for piano, video projections and “foto-suoni” on CD (soundscape excerpts recorded by the same composer in Prague, Wien and Munich). The second part of the concert opens with one of the greatest masterpieces of vocal chamber music written in the early twentieth century, Deux mélodies hébraïques on Yiddish texts, by Maurice Ravel, who was a close friend of Alfredo Casella. They too were composed in 1914, revisiting two traditional songs, one in original Aramaic language and the other one in Yiddish, to which Ravel gives a new intense emotional charge. Finally there is the last masterpiece of the greatest composer of Italian vocal chamber music, Francesco Paolo Tosti, written just in the middle of the Great War, a few weeks before his death, on the eponymous poem by Gabriele D’Annunzio: Consolazione(Consolation). In this rare performance (as in fact it is a work not frequently performed), six of the eight parts are extracted, and the last one is the very moving and unforgettable “farewell to life” of the great Tosti: Mentre che fra le tende scolorate… (While beetwen the discolored curtains…), probably the last tenuous imagines in his old and tired eyes…

Defined by The Washington Post as the Duo “with a big voice and a fine sense of comedic timing” and as “high theatrics Duo with a strong personality” by Los Angeles Times, “The Duo that gives voice (and piano) to the Italian twentieth century” by la Repubblica of Rome and as “an electric experience” by the Hindu of Chennai, the Duo Alterno has published 19 CDs among which 4 monographies with world-first recordings of Giorgio Federico Ghedini, Alfredo Casella and Franco Alfano (Nuova Era, 2000/4) plus the wide collection La voce contemporanea in Italia – volumes 1-6 (Stradivarius, 2005/14, with pieces by Abbado, Andrini, Battistelli, Berberian, Berio, Bortolotti, Bosco, Bussotti, Cage, Cattaneo, Clementi, Colla, Corghi, Dallapiccola, Donatoni, Esposito, Ferrero, Gentile, Giuliano, Guarnieri, Landini, Lombardi, Maderna, Manzoni, Morricone, Mosso, Nono, Petrassi, Pinelli, Scelsi, Sciarrino, Solbiati, Vacchi) and La voce crepuscolare (Stradivarius, 2010).Their experimental research on “foto-musica con foto-suoni” © has led to six CDs of soundtracks for museums: Musiche della Reggia di Venaria Reale, Mina miniera mia, Treni persi, Arie condizionate, Shahar (Curci, 1999) and Musiche dell’aurora.

They have also given numerous performances in Italy, from the MiTo Festival in Turin to Società dei Concerti and I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, I Teatri di Reggio Emilia, Accademia Filarmonica, Centro La Soffitta and Teatro Comunale in Bologna, GAMO in Florence, Festival Millemondi in Naples, Festival Scelsi in Palermo, Amici della Musica in Pistoia, Udine, Venice, Musica d’oggi, Nuovi Spazi Musicali and Nuova Consonanza in Rome, etc.
